Makrys Gialos is not far from the main road and is the most popular beach on this stretch of Kefalonia’s coast. It is long with lovely fine sand and lots of great facilities including tavernas, water sports, barsm beds and umbrellas. This beach is great for families. Platys Gialos is slightly smaller than Makrys but has great facilities including changing rooms and showers. It is very inviting with fine sand and a picturesque outlook. Great for families it is close to the White rocks hotel complex.
ANTISAMOS
While the beach has minimal facilities, it does have a violet sea lapping a arc of while pebbles in the most perfect luxury setting. Antisamos beach is one of the beast beaches of Kefalonia and is located nearby the village of Sami, 22 kilometres from Argostoli, the capital of the island. It is a beautiful and attractive pebble beach with turquoise waters, surrounded by impressive verdant hills. Thousands of visitors are attracted every summer by the natural beauty of the place. Antisamos Beach also offers a snack bar. A famous and picturesque horse-shoe shaped beach of course white sand and pebbles surrounded by slopes of fir trees. There is a snack bar on the beach. It was here that Captain Corelli drilled his men at the Italian encampment set on the beach at Antisamos. ..
MELISSANI LAKE & CAVE
Melissani is actually a lake that exists inside the caves and a visit there is worth a while. During the excavations, many relics from the Minoan culture that had images of the god Pan and the Nymphs were founded and this is why somehow the lake is called Lake of the Nymphs. You can find Melissani Lake very close to the Sami, about 30km from Argostoli, on the east coast of Kefalonia.
PLATIA AMMOS
.
Until recently this long beach of course white sand and shingle was only accessible by boat, but with a great engineering feat, there are now over 200 steps complete with handrails to access the beach. High above the cliffs there's a platform with magnificent views and this is reached by a gravel road. Anyone who suffers from vertigo should not attempt to reach the beach by using the concrete steps. Great care should be taken when using the beach as the water is extremely deep and the currents can be dangerous. But when you finally arrive on this pristine beach, all the effort is well deserved! Make sure to take drinking water with you, as there is nothing down there but you and the clear sea... .
ASSOS .
This small village is probably the most scenic and picturesque place in Kefalonia. Almost as if it's been stuck in time, a village square with a few tavernas a small harbour with turquoise water lapping gently at the shore. Higgledy-piggledy houses all jostling for room around the waters edge. This is the place to come and while away the day and do nothing, except sample the local wine, nibble on the fish caught that morning and just soak up the tranquillity and peacefulness. From the main road driving from Argostoli to the north of the island (36km far), the signs for Assos lead to a series of hairpin bends that take you down the peninsular, where you will find the romantic village. . .
FISCARDO
. Fiscardo village is located 50 kilometres away from Argostoli and it is the northernmost port of Kefalonia. Many little fishing boats are mooring in it and from that spot, one can see the close coast of the island of Ithaca. This beautiful and picturesque fishing village is very famous because it is one of the few villages that have not been destroyed by the disastrous earthquake of 1953. Most of the traditional and Venetian buildings of the village have therefore been preserved and give Fiscardo a unique charm and atmosphere. Therefore, it has become a popular destination and attracts many every year. Nearby the village one can find many beautiful pebble beaches and coves offering calm and crystalline waters as well as ruins of a Palaeolithic settlement and of a Byzantine church, and many other picturesque and interesting sites. From here you can also take the ferry boat to Lefkada during the summer months. .
EMPLYSI
A delightful secluded pebble beach shaded by Cyprus trees with flat rocks either side suitable for sunbathing, lies on the north part of the island, around 54km from Argostoli. The shallow waters shelve down and the crystal sea here is great for swimming. The waters are too shallow for motor boats to moor and they should be anchored in the bay. Stunning views across to Ithaca. The beach is quite small and can get busy in high season as it is just a short drive from Fiscardo (take the turning at Heroditos Taverna at the top of the road). . .
DAFNOUDI .
Dafnoudi is a beatiful, small and secluded beach, at the bottom of a steep, natural valley. It is not well-known, but the ones who found their way to get there are definitely going back! Dafnoudi is located close to Fiscardo, about 40km from Argostoli. From the main road (coming from Argostoli) once you enter Antipata village, take a left turn at the taverna. After exactly 1.2km you will see on your right hand side the beginning of the narrow path. Park the car and walk down to the little gulf. Make sure you have something to protect you from the sun and some drinking water, as Dafnoudi is isolated and once you get there, you will definitely want to stay for a long time

The island

Myrtos beach is the trademark of Kefalonia Island and is considered as one of the most beautiful beaches of the entire Ionian Islands. Located north of Argostoli (the island’s capital), this impressive beach has a fine golden sand and wonderful turquoise waters (as if someone has thrown bleach in the blue sea); the whole place is surrounded by impressive and majestic vertical rocky cliffs. This pure paradise is one of the most photographed places in Greece and attracts thousands of visitors every summer. A snack-bar, sun beds and umbrellas rentals are available on the beach.
A perfect paradise, so close to Argostoli, Platis and Makrys Gailos in the village of Lassi, are the main beaches for the people who live in Kefalonia's capital. These sandy beaches with the pine trees above are well run by the local council who provides toilets, showers and changing rooms. They have a snack bar by the beach from where you can also hire sunbeds and beach umbrellas. Swimming is safe for children in the shallow waters.
This magnificent place was discovered in 1951 and took the name of one of the nymphs. Lake Melissani has an absolute invisible specialty, which sounds pretty strange. The lake water is brackish, a mixture of sea water and sweet water. The cave is about 500m from the sea, and the water level is a metre higher than sea level. The brackish water rises from a 30m deep cave system on one side of the cave and flows silently to the other end of the cave, flowing through narrow crivices into the sea.
